In today’s post I want to have a detailed look at a product recently released by Steve Scott from www.stevescott.com.
That product is called Affiliate Marketing Without The Bulls**t
Before we gets started with the review let me just lay out some disclaimers for you:
- (i) If you go check out Steve’s product as a result of this review I won’t earn a cent from it. Any links here are non affiliate links.
- (ii) Although I don’t ‘do’ Affiliate Marketing per se, I’ve read a bunch about it, attended Webinars etc etc, watched affiliate marketing product launches as part of my ongoing efforts to expand my domain map.
- (iii) On Page 3 of Module 1 of his Course, Steve writes: “…I created this course for special people who know a real business requires real work. LAZY PEOPLE NEED NOT APPLY. (My emphasis). If you’re looking for a magic bullet you’re in the wrong place.
So let’s dive in.
So What’s Affiliate Marketing Without The B.S. About?
It’s not rocket science to know this course is about Affiliate Marketing! But Steve takes a different approach to affiliate marketing than I’ve seen before.
Most guys teaching affiliate marketing that I’ve seen take the approach of creating multiple sites in multiple markets. Maybe selling one or two products from each site – and selling them from a website that contains only a few pages of content.
Steve’s methodology is to build an authority blog that attracts traffic – and gets people to subscribe to an email list. And then the majority of the actual affiliate marketing is done via email broadcasts and autoresponder sequences.
Now this ‘model’ is one that’s used by lots of successful online businesses – and not just affiliate businesses. What Steve’s done is adapt that model to suit affiliate marketing – and then explain how YOU can do that too in the course itself.
Building an Authority Website – and then monetizing that website via emails with affiliate offers is a business model with several distinct parts. Steve breaks down those parts and delivers 8 Modules explaining how he does it.
You can see a more detailed explanation of each module on Steve’s Sales Page, but here’s a brief description of each module:
1) Module 1 – Superior Affiliate Mindset Explained
Steve’s first module contains the phrase I quoted above: Lazy People Need Not Apply. This encapsulates the reason that I like Steve’s blog – we share beliefs that the best way to success is via hard work over time. (In fact it’s not just the best way…it’s the only way).
Module 1 is about the mindset needed for success using Steve’s model of affiliate marketing. There’s some info here that applies to all online businesses – not just those based on affiliate marketing – and Steve then lays out a map for what’s needed to succeed with his model. Which he then builds on in subsequent modules.
2) Module 2 – The Affiliate Research Formula
This module is all about finding a profitable niche that you can look to become an authority in. Steve talks about why it’s important to choose a good, narrow market and looks at several places where you can do research – both in the ‘researching ideas’ phase and for generating content ideas once you’ve made a final decision.
Steve gave away a copy of this module on his blog as part of his pre-launch strategy and to give people an idea of the quality of his materials. You can still find that here.
3) Module 3 – Affiliate Niche Domination
Module 3 is about becoming an authority in the Market that you’ve chosen to enter – and the ways you can do that.
This ‘step’ will take time in most markets – remember that Steve’s approach is about building a business over time, not about making money over night. There are some lessons on branding and USP too.
4) Building A Rock Solid Affiliate System
This module covers the basic steps needed to get your website up and running – from registering the domain name, to creating an opt-in bonus, to building a squeeze page and the rest of your site.
This is your ‘authority hub’ if you like – where you will drive traffic, and get them to subscribe so that you can then develop your relationship with them via email. Which leads us to Module 5.
5) Proven Email Income Strategies
This Module is worth the entry price on its own – it’s all about building a relationship with the subscribers on your email list, and then generating revenues by sending emails with links to quality products.
Email marketing is a topic that everyone one kind of knows about, but don’t actually know much about it. Perry Marshall is probably the industry expert on this – he’s produced numerous ‘Autoresponder Bootcamp’ type products.
Steve does a great job of teaching you about Autoresponder sequences – what to do, what not to do. Loved this module.
6) Lifelong Traffic generation Blueprint
For your affiliate marketing system to work, you need traffic. Module 6 is an overview on getting traffic to your site and covers Article ~Marketing, Blogging, Podcasting, Pay Per Click, SEO, Squidoo, Video Marketing and Social Media.
These aren’t the only ways to generate traffic of course – but if you asked industry experts to make a top 10 list of traffic strategies, these would probably all be on them.
Now Steve only gives an overview of each method – but he’s very clear that each topic could be a course on its own and that he’s giving you pointers for you to get started.
7) Next Level Affiliate Marketing
The previous modules deal with the basics of Steve’s system. In Module 7 Steve tells you how you can step it up a gear and leverage what you’ve already built to generate greater revenues.
One thing that I’m guilty of NOT doing is given an overview here – testing and tracking. And I know the importance of Testing And Tracking – but I don’t do it. (How dumb am I?) So that’s something that I have to change…the information here gives me a starting point.
8) Affiliate Success…Made Simple
In this final module Steve talks about core learning he’s taken from doing affiliate marketing that have streamlined his systems and maximized his effectiveness.
And there’s a golden section on 20 Mistakes and how to avoid them – some great content in that section.
9. Quick Start Guide
There’s also a quick start guide that steps you through Steve’s suggested sequence and refers you back to the pages you need to reference anything.
This is a great way of both giving you an overview of the material when you’ve read it, and giving you a blueprint for actually implementing.
And that’s vital – because it doesn’t matter how good the information is, if it gathers virtual dust on your hard drive you’re not going to achieve any success or generate any revenues.
My Thoughts On Affiliate Marketing Without The BS
Steve is a guy who’s walking the walk – he’s been working online as his full time job since 2005. And he doesn’t claim he’s fabulously wealthy – but he lives life on his own terms (e.g. a 7 month backpacking trip around Europe last year).
This course is a result of his experiences on his journey. So all of these strategies are battle tried and tested – they’re not theory. They WILL work.
And even if you don’t plan to become an affiliate marketer the course contains valuable information that more than justifies you investing the modest price that Steve is charging. Even though I consider my domain map to be pretty wide, for me the sections on Tracking and Testing and Autoresponders were verrrryyyyy interesting and of high value.
If you plan to set up a traditional website, build an audience and become an authority, and monetize that authority website by selling your own products and services, Steve’s course gives you the blueprint for setting up your own website to do exactly that.
The major difference is that you build your own products and services into your Autoresponder instead of affiliate products.
(You’d probably want to set your website up a little differently too – but the general principles are the same.)
Summary – Do I Recommend Affiliate Marketing Without the BS?
The answer to that question is that I do recommend Steve’s course – IF using affiliate marketing to produce one of your income streams is actually one of the monetization goals you have for your website. The Course has got lots of great information – and provides the right foundations to build a successful online business based on affiliate marketing.
The Course is relatively cheap – I’ve seen other affiliate marketing courses that cost 10 times as much and covered less ground – and you’re covered by Steve’s 60 Day Money Back guarantee.
Here’s the Sales Page again – remember this is NOT an affiliate link:
Affiliate Marketing Without The Bulls**t
If you’re still not sure, here’s a link to Steve’s ‘Start Here’ page on his website. On that page you’ll find a bunch of links to some great and detailed articles:
(Paul’s Note: even if you’re NOT thinking of buying Steve’s course or checking it out – you should still go here and read a bunch of the articles Steve’s written. He’s linked to some great content here.)

Hi Paul,
Your review was enough to entice me to take a look at Steve’s sales page and, hence, grab a copy of his course. The price point is unbelievably low. I’ve been doing affiliate marketing for a about three years but not seeing the results I’m shooting for.
If Steve’s strategies help to boost my affiliate sales, I’ll be signing up to become an affiliate for his course!
Thanks for doing a great job on this review,
Melanie

Hopefully Steve’s course can help you out – don’t forget that you’ve got two email ‘consultations/questions’ that you can use as part of the package. Steve knows his stuff – so make sure you use those!
Paul
Will do, Paul! Thanks for the reminder.
Not everyone offers this kind of “personal” assistance. Steve definitely stands out from the pack.

My monetization plan doesn’t include affiliate marketing for the time being – but from your review, it seems to me that one could use Steve’s system for any plan that includes selling a product – especially if it’s our own.
Marina Brito@Defeat The Cousin recently posted..Can flying an airplane be easier than promoting my blog?
Hola Marina!
Steve’s system is different than most affilaite marketing stuff I’ve seen out there – they focus on small sites and many niches. Steve focuses on one site, and making that site an authority site. And then communicating – and selling to – the audience via emails.
The two areas in Steve’s course that I’m pretty sure you won’t have come across before are the module on Email Marketing and the module that includes info on Testing and Tracking.
Those are two areas that I definitely plan to read in more depth and try and implement into my One Spoon plan. (the tracking thang…I’ve known for a while I need to do it, I’ve just avoided doing it. Reading the info in Steve’s course has just made me realize how badly I need to do it…)

Wow. Cool. Thanks Paul. I’m still working on step 1. Build a following on your blog! But what a great system you’ve reviewed there.
Marina, someone else could be making money from your product(s) as an affiliate…
Great work Paul. Very easy to read, and get a sense of it. Good pre-sell of a type for Steve.

Hey neil
Thanks for dropping by. We’re all working on building a following! One thing I’d advise is work out a number and when you hit that number (either daily visits, subscribers, anything) then have that number trigger the next phase of your plan. Otherwise you’ll be building your audience forever!

I have to admit I’m not convinced.

I do make money by recommending complementary products and services which I would recommend anyway, via affiliate links.
But I really don’t know about only selling affiliate products and none of your own products/services.
After all, even the creator of this product about affiliate marketing is (at least now) selling *his own product*. Right?

Hey Trish
That’s a valid point – and one I totally get.
I’ve known Steve online for about 6 months, and been following his blog. What’s interesting to me about Steve is that he shares a similar feeling about what it takes to be successful (hard work over time – no other way!), but the path he’s taken to turn his primary web site into a business is the affiliate route. And because he’s gone down that route, he has a different perspective on elements of online business that I find really interesting and helpful. (for example see my comments to Marina above about Testing and Tracking and Autoresponder sequences).
Normally I’d send a tweet to Steve or email him and get him to come here and answer your comments directly, but he’s off to Europe for three months to go backpacking this week – and he’s up against that deadline. (That sound like anyone you know?)
What I DO know is that up until the launch of this product his full time income came from his affiliate sites. (I think he has 2). And he built those up to generate a reasonable revenue – and then increased that revenue for one of the sites by creating his own product.
I know he’s got future products planned – I think at least one of them is to do with moving an affiliate based authority site to the next level via creating info products.
Personally I agree with you in that I couldn’t foresee wanting to build a site and sell ONLY affiliate products. But Steve is the real deal – he’s teaching what he’s been doing for years. And he still does it.

Nice article, Paul.
I’ve read Steve’s material and I like it. His material reminds me of Woody Allen’s quote, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.”
It doesn’t matter if the product is yours or from someone else if your goal is to provide stellar service to your customer as long there is a good match between person and product to get the last 20%.
Morris @ Get Found with Navegare recently posted..What do you look for in an Excellent SEO Marketing Specialist?
Hey Morris
One of the reasons I like Steve’s stuff is his attitude that you only get success with hard work. He doesn’t believe in ‘get rich quick’ schemes – and if you check out some of his articles linked from his ‘Start Here’ page you’ll find that attitude informs his posts and his working methodologies.
In one of his modules he says something like: ‘I don’t believe in competition – because most people are lazy and provided you commit to working hard the majority of your competitors will disqualify themselves because they’re not prepared to do the work.’
That’s a great statement – and one I totally agree with. I wish more people had this attitude and talked about it! Thanks for stopping by.

Sure Trisha, that may suit someone like you who CAN create their own product. But what about someone who is not so clever, lacks confidence, or is working so blinking hard on getting their audience for their blog, at first they don’t have the creative energy for it.
Surely also, there will be opportunities that pop up in between offerings from Affiliates too, which in the end someone who is committed to their niche will be able to create a product for.
I think the way that Paul has done a review of this course, and provided us with something to think about, and learn more about is an excellent example of what a quality affiliate programme driven blog could do.
And I’m quick to remind myself that Paul has chosen not to go down the affiliate route, for reasons that are way beyond my comprehension.
In my opinion choosing affiliate programmes, without or without your own product is just what you do depending on your ability, confidence, and time.
For some people, they can spend the time on the product, and hope for the traffic, or equally on both, but others would spend the time on building the traffic, and not the product. : )

This raises some interesting points.
Firstly to answer your question about affiliate products – which is a good one. When I started my bass guitar site, I didn’t do ANY research. I started it as a ‘test’ for online business because I already knew about the subject and didn’t need to do any research. And thought I was taking the easy route!
And by necessity I had to create eBooks and courses and services and other ways to generate revenue because Adsense and donations didn’t work, and the only products available in this market with decent affiliate commissions I wasn’t prepared to recommend as they weren’t good enough in my opinion (and there were only 1 or 2 at that time).
So I learned how to create different types of info product – and I’ve learned that you have far more control with your own products.
(I’ll be back…)
Paul Wolfe recently posted..Product Review: Affiliate Marketing Without The B.S.
The other way that you can use Affiliate Marketing is to actually test the profitability of a market.
So let’s say you were setting up in that hoary old favourite ‘Dog Training’ – you’d set up your site, start attracting traffic and monetize that traffic with some affiliate products. If you find you start generating a decent income THEN you’d take the time to research and develop your own product.
The affiliate marketing is a ‘cheap’ way of testing the marketing out (‘Cheap’ as in time invested).
And you hit the nail on the head at the end of your comment – whatever you do (whether affiliate stuff, own products, services, whatever) has to align with both your goals, and the plan you have set up to meet your goals.
Thanks for stopping by.

It’s not this product in particular that I’m ‘not convinced’ about. It’s the idea that you can rely on affiliate income as your bread and butter. Maybe I’ve got too much on an independent spirit. I just don’t want to rely on ‘somebody else’s product’ always being there, and always being supported.
Trisha Cupra recently posted..Printable Play Money for Shopping games
I understand where you’re coming from. That’s why I put in the summary that the product was worth buying IF – and note the IF – that method of monetizing aligns with your goals.
If affiliate marketing is not a good fit for you – then you know what to do! As with everything there are advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to everyone to weigh that particular balance with how it affects them.
I do use affiliate sales on my bass site – but only on book reviews. And the commission that i get – i think is around 8 or 9% – I use to buy more bass books so I can review them for my paying subscribers. It’s not a significant amount of money.
If you’re looking to make significant income from affiliate marketing it’s imperative you choose the right niche.

@Trish,
Let’s put it all into a real world perspective.
Pretty much everything in the industrial world is ‘affiliate’. @Paul, do you build and sell guitars? I know Neil doesn’t underwrite insurance policies.
Most manufacturing companies have independent reps (affiliates) selling their products. When a manufacturer has both direct sales and independents, the independent usually make more money.
If you sell your own product, that means you need to be good at making and selling. When selling another person’s product, you just need to be good at selling.
I remember an old divorce attorney TV ad. “I do only one thing and I do it well’.
In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins calls it the Hedgehog concept.

You know Paul, I signed up with a program last November and promised myself I would follow it step by step no matter what. I created my blog, posted at the end of each week and shared exactly what I was doing, did everything they told me and had a successful profitable business within just 5 months. Oh, and I started making money my very first month.
After going through it and building my list to 140 I surveyed my list asking them what kind of product they would like to see from me. You know what they told me? They wanted to know how I had built my business in just 5 months. I wrote about it every step of the way in my blog but instead, they wanted to buy that product from me. Imagine that.
Steve’s product looks like the same type of thing I’ve been doing as well so I KNOW it works. Go Steve!!! Bravo!
Thanks for this honest review and it’s great to see someone else putting out there for all to see that it takes hard work and dedication to start making money. But it can be done.

Hi Paul,
I was lucky and bought the course while I was on vacation (and I’m still on vacation). I bought the premium version, because of the audio. I wanted to be able to listen to it on my iPhone while walking. So far, I’ve been listening to more than 6 hours of it, and it’s just amazing. I can’t say enough good things about this product, and Steve has done an amazing job (and the woman reading as well, her voice is crystal clear and it’s very easy to understand). I’m going to start applying these techniques when I get back from camping (I’m living in a tent right now).
I hope you’re having a fantastic summer Paul.
